We’re excited to have Charise as a guest writer today, here to tell us more about how Super-Cute Paper Piecing came to be (and how her designs came to be so darn cute!).

Charise RandellSewing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mom taught me how to sew doll clothes when I was six years old, and I’ve been sewing ever since! I studied accounting in college but always dreamed of being a fashion designer. I made the switch to fashion and never turned back, having a successful career designing women’s clothes for almost 20 years.

When I left my day job to stay at home with my young boys, I discovered a vibrant online sewing community. I joined an online paper-piecing group and was hooked!

I love the results you can achieve with paper piecing. Once you learn the technique, you can easily make intricate and precise blocks. In Super Cute Paper Piecing, I share step-by-step instructions for how to paper piece. If you have never tried paper piecing, I will help you master the technique in no time! I also share my favorite tools, as well as tips for matching seams and fussy cutting motifs for your blocks. Fussy cutting is such a fun way to add a unique and special touch.

Because I like to make useful items, I designed a project for each paper-pieced block in the book. I love to have cute sewn items surrounding me, and you will find lots to surround you in Super Cute Paper Piecing. From zipper pouches to purses, a fabric bowl, coasters, and a mini-quilt, there are many fun projects to make.

If you haven’t tried paper piecing before, I hope you love the projects in the book and are inspired to start. If you’re already an experienced paper piecer, there are lots of fun projects for you to try.

Happy sewing!

  • Well….I took a class for paper piecing a specific winning quilt design this past Spring. It was NY Beauty. I live in TN for over 40 years now but my family is in NY. I have always wanted to do NY Beauty! I had a great deal of trouble with getting the 2nd, 3rd and 4th blocks done correctly at the start up after I went home! I kept piecing onto the wrong side of the paper. There was a lot of ripping out! Oh it was with sheer determination for the love of the block design that I kept going. I was going to "win this one" I aid to myself.=, and I did win. I was able to do it many more times without mistakes with my scraps until I had about 20 assorted blocks. In the end I found that the assorted blocks did not look well together. I need to purchase fabrics that have a strong contrast for it to be successful. I haven’t done that yet but I know sometime I will because I love that block design!

—Susan Chinouth on November 29, 2017

  • I have never tried paper piecing but would love to learn how. I make lap sized quilts and other small items to donate to the Toronto General Hospital transplant program for their annual raffle and craft sale. The monies generated from this sale enable some people on the transplant waiting list to stay close to the hospital for when that special call comes, indicating that a donor organ is a match. Being able to offer unique and affordable items for this worthy charity would be wonderful!

  • I just ADORE paper piecing. Mostly because of the precision and accuracy you can achieve with complex designs, especially sharp points. I will admit that I took some getting used to [and a few really, really bad practice pieces — LOL]. After all, you’re piecing backwards and upside-down.

I’ve paper pieced a few, major issue is getting them backwards when there are several blocks that go together to make a whole (recent christmas tree wall hanging with ONE section out of 8 somehow I did backwards! it is on the cutting board again to redo that one, sigh) BUT small single blocks are fab! Lovely book, I need to order it for my daughter, who makes bags! good ideas

  • I fell in love with a paper pieced emergency vehicle baby quilt from Quiltmaker magazine some years ago and just had to make it for a friend who was expecting their first child. I had no clue where to begin so a friend sat me down and had me do the ambulance with scraps. An orange and lavender ambulance emerged and was adorable. Then I tackled the real fabric and made a hook and ladder fire truck and the rest was history. That little ladder was perfect and I was so "hooked." I love these patterns. It’s a modern twist and I really like it.

When paper piecing started there was no tools and rulers and it was a trial and air procedure. It is much more fun now nd more accurate. great for beginners and small pieces. I use paper piecing when I really like the pattern. I have also replaced piecing with paper piecing especially with my own designs

    —Donna on November 29, 2017
  • These have got to be some of the cutest patterns I’ve seen – because some of them don’t look too large – they are very do-able for paper piecing.

  • I’ve paper pieced one small quilt and would love to do another one featuting the adorable clothes in the book.

  • My first experience with paper piecing was at the local guild group. I was involved with the friendship blocks where you sew their block within the month and later on they would see yours. Win-win right? A member chose a paper piecing block with 64 sections and gave us fabric. She was not generous in fabrics pieces. Pure torture! And to top it off, she dropped out of the group once her blocks were completed.

    —Kathleen H on November 29, 2017
  • I learned paperpiecing at a quilt guild workshop and was hooked. We made a small quilt that I turned into a travel bag for my rulers and put an ironing surface on reverse. After that I designed a quilt for a grandchild, paperpieced animals. I find it fascinating!

  • I love to paper piece.

—Julie Hallquist on November 29, 2017
  • I’ve done several paper piecing projects. Once I had a rather hard traditional pieced block that needed to be a specific size with a few pieces needing exact odd size with points, so I paper pieced it after drawing on graph paper. Worked like a charm! Much better and more accurate than the cardboard cut templates.

    —Marianne on November 29, 2017
  • So adorable and the fabric used for each sample perfect

    —Shannon on November 29, 2017
  • I tried it once. These blocks are so cute.

  • I made one foundation paper pieced block two years ago: it was part of a quilting group’s project as a gift for a local long-arm quilter who had been re-diagnosed with breast cancer. It was the ONLY time I’ve ever done it, and I haven’t purchased a pattern nor tried it since then…. truly tempting now that I’ve seen fun blocks like these designs.

entire quilt. I never quite “got it.” I would love to try again.
    Thanks,
    Mary

    —Mary T Salmon on November 29, 2017
  • I have never tried paper piecing but I think it looks interesting, but challenging. There was an older lady in our quilt guild that did it. I watched her one day and it was amazing the way she would just pick up little pieces of fabric and fit them on her design and sew them on and then pick up another piece of fabric, sew it on and just keep it up. It looks like something that would be fun to do once you got the hang of it.

—Angela Bowling on November 29, 2017
  • I’ve done one paper pieced quilt. It is time to do more.

    —Joanne L Wilson on November 29, 2017
  • I hated paper piecing. Couldn’t do it. I joined an online “block of the month” and one of the blocks was paper piecing. I did it, although not very well. I am now attempting to make 400 paper pieced blocks for a quilt. I’ve turned the corner and now love paperpiecing. I’m even joking to find the quilt I put swat and never finished because it had a very easy ( I only realised that now ) paper pieced Block.

—Lynne Shields on November 29, 2017
  • I have made just a few paper pieced blocks and enjoyed doing them. However, they were not as cute as those done by Charise so I did not have any incentive to do more. Would love to try some of her designs!

  • I love Ms. Randall’s style and designs. I have followed her blog for several years now. Paper-piecing is what saved the "updated" version of quilting for me. I learned to piece from my grandmother when I was a child, so rotary cutters, etc. were new to me in 2002. Matching all those points using a machine drove me crazy. I was ready to say, "Forget it!" to quilting and continue on with heirloom sewing, which I dearly love, until a friend begged me to take a class with her. That’s where I learned to paper-piece. Once the light bulb came on, after three really bad mistakes, I realized that I could sew on a line. Thank heaven for paper-piecing and pushy friends.
