Solomon Stars quilt
Solomon Stars by Anita Grossman Solomon

One of the best parts of Rock Solid—aside from the star-studded designer lineup—is that you can create any quilt in the book exactly as shown. How? We’ve included the names of the Kona colors each designer used in her quilt! From Canary and Bonsai to Honeysuckle, Flame, and Pepper, you’ll be able to easily find each Kona color (303 to be exact) at your local quilt shop or online. Of course, you can opt to color in your Rock Solid quilts any way you like!

Spectrum quilt
Julie Herman’s Spectrum quilt uses 30 different colors of Kona solids—a true rainbow!

And that star-studded lineup? Get inspired by Christa Watson, Heather Jones, Elizabeth Dackson, Angela Walters, Debbie Grifka, and more.

  • I’m just now making room for solids. I have small pieces of about ten different colors from a fat quarter bundle splurge. The solids are great. I never realized how much they add to the project when you combine them with some prints. Now I see how beautiful a quilt can be made out of only solids. Thank you for the giveaway.

  • My stash of solids is a bit spotty. I have quite a few "pretty" colors, but I need to buckle down and shop for some uglies like muddy green and brownish yellow. Wow–the quilts pictured here are fabulous! I would LOVE that bundle and book; thanks for the giveaway.

  • I love the natural Kona solid. I use it when I want a background that works well with warm colors or something that has the vintage look of muslin but is a great quality.
I have also used the PFD white Kona quite often when I want a white that isn’t quite so bright as the white Kona. I used the white as backgrounds in two quilts I made for Christmas gifts last year.
I have used other basics such as black, brown. red, and green in many of my quilts. Whenever I need a solid in the scrappy quilts I make, my first choice is always Kona!!

  • A rainbow but always rooms for more.

—Liz Sumner on June 16, 2017
  • My solid stash has bits of various colors for projects long forgotten so these now are game for anything that happens to come to mind. My current project includes a turquoise ombre with appliques of all sorts of colors. It satisfies my need to use my stash and my need for a controlled base fabric.
I can always find room for another piece or pieces of anything fabric including solids for my next vision.

  • Most of my fabrics are old, colorful but old. Love the new colors and am trying to update my stash.

—Jackie Kelly on June 17, 2017
  • I use to just by the fabrics, only if I liked them. And then I would only buy 1 yard of the fabrics. Well, now that I am a quilt maker, I see now that I sure wasted a lot of time and money on all those 1 yard pieces. I have mostly patterned fabrics, but I want to make a plain quilt with a black background and all different solid colors in the top of the quilt. I am so glad I got into quilting when I did. It sure has changed my life around.. I have a 2 bedroom home and one whole bedroom is nothing but craft things for me to do. But my most favorite craft is "QUILT MAKING " I think I have almost every quilt book ever made……..haha
Winning this bundle would put me right over the top. I would start that quilt as soon as I got the fabrics. I Hope……… I Hope…….
I hope………this will be the start of my good luck.
    Thanx You

  • My rule of thumb when buying a new book is that it has to have at the least 3 quilts that I would love to make. Rock solid surpassed that.
My stash has a variety of fabric styles. Solids is one box. BUT…I can always use another. One…two…or more.

    —Wren on June 23, 2017

    —Glenna D. on July 2, 2017
  • I am making several quilts at the same time right now. I use as many colors as the pattern calls for and coordinate them to look pleasing. I use lg and small prints and solids together. I am making a Robert Kaufman pattern that uses one of his fabric design bundles and not all of the colors in the bundle are in the quilt design but I can tell you it is shades of purple, greens, aquas, white, pinks. It is for my grandaughter who Said I like lots of color as she splayed out all of her fingers, shook her arms and smiled really big while she said that. She was feeling the colors- I think- in her mind. She used her body language to describe the excitement of LOTS OF COLOR and how it makes her feel SO HAPPY ! It was really a great way to describe it.

  • Sometimes a solid is the perfect choice to add to a block to give our eyes a rest from the busy patterns. Kind of like a tranquil part!

—Mary Smith on July 4, 2017
  • Seems like most of the quilts in the "new" modern quilt movement make use of a variety of solids, and I love it! As an art teacher I am drawn to color and I have been building a rainbow stash of solids in the last few years. Kona could not have a variety of too many lights, darks, tints, shades, neutrals, primaries, secondaries, or intermediates as far as I am concerned!

—Patricia Hambrick on July 19, 2017
  • Not usually a solid fan but these are great quilts!
