We’re excited to have Kristyne as our guest writer to tell you about the inspiration behind her new book.

Kristyne CzepurykI’ve been a quilter for 30+ years, but I’ve been a maker for even longer. I started sewing as a little girl, and then discovered quilting when I was 19. Quilting became my creative outlet for several years. But I accidentally wandered into a whole new world that combined patchwork and quilting with other sewing projects.

It all started when my second baby was born and I wanted to make myself a pretty diaper bag. That turned into more bags, smaller pouches with zippers, and all sorts of dimensional sewing projects made with patchwork.

For well over a decade now, I’ve spent a lot of time employing my quilting skills to make things other than quilts. I wrote Perfectly Pretty Patchwork as an invitation to quilters and sewists to rethink their exceptional talents with fabric and thread, and to consider interesting ways to exercise their creativity by making something other than a quilt.

From Perfectly Pretty Patchwork

The book features eight traditional patchwork motifs, including Flying Geese, Irish Chain, Baskets, and Mill and Stars, and shows how these timeless, beautiful designs can be used in both a quilt AND a dimensional project.

From Perfectly Pretty PatchworkDon’t get me wrong, I love quilts. They are a lovely combination of functionality and beauty. Each quilt is an expression of the maker’s design aesthetic, talent, and personality. But there’s something appealing about smaller objects that really captures my imagination and drives my desire to create. Perhaps it’s because I’ve always been attracted to small things. Perhaps it has something to do with the time required to make something smaller. I’ve gifted many small patchwork objects because they’re quick to make and more affordable to construct than a large quilt. Small projects satisfy my need to play with fabric and to choose from an endless library of patchwork designs to suit my mood and creativity.

Mill and Stars
Mill and Stars

If you’re looking to branch outside the realm of quiltmaking, Perfectly Pretty Patchwork has a lot of inspiration and technical information to help you cross that bridge like I did. Try a pillow cover to enhance your home decor, zippered pouches to store everything from notions to makeup, a tote to carry portable sewing projects or beach-reading material, pincushions to adorn your work space, needle books to organize your tools, and simple quilt blocks that will become a piece of art in your home. I’m sure you’ll find something that sparks your imagination and desire to make something out of patchwork that is, well, perfectly pretty!

  • Hi! I love your book and I love your color combinations! I am alot like you – I started sewing clothes at the age of 10 then I got into quilting when my daughter left for college, I wanted her to have a quilt to sleep with. Boy I remember that quilt taking me forever – and the other day my daughter laughed at me when I told her "remember how long it took me to make my first quilt?" She said – "Mom: It was only 34 x 49″. I have made headwaves since then. Last year I purchased my first longarm. And, as you probably have guessed, my daughter also quilts. In fact she learned to quilt before she learned to sew clothes. We have sewn almost everything imaginable. Lots and lots of bags, zippered pouches. We just love quilting!
