Patriotic patchwork: celebrating the Red, White, and Blue

Patriotic Dreams PillowSummer is here—hooray! We all look forward to fun in the sun, but here in the USA we also enjoy celebrating our country’s independence on the 4th of July. Picnics, barbeques, fireworks, and oh YES, a day off!

If you’re in need of some new holiday decorations, a new picnic quilt, or maybe just a little inspiration for a Quilts of Valor quilt, read on!

How cute is this little number? One red-and-white charm pack plus some extra red fabric and a bit of blue plaid is all you need for this easy-peasy table topper.

Sometimes simple really is better! The centered placement of rows of blue-and-white four patches on a red background is so effective. This quilt requires three charm packs plus a background fabric and a striped binding fabric, and it fits the guidelines for a Quilts of Valor quilt. Imagine the background fabric in a deep patriotic red—so pretty!

If you have some red and blue 2½" strips hanging around waiting for a project, this quilt will fill the bill nicely! Imagine this one draped over your furniture for a nice pop of patriotic color.

Short on time (aren’t we all)? It doesn’t get any more patriotic than the American flag, and this quick-to-stitch version measures just 12″! So, no matter how small your home is or how little time you have to decorate, you can still show off your love for the Red, White, and Blue.

Does it get much more “4th of July” than stars and pinwheels? This little table topper gives you both and could be stitched up in an afternoon!

I just couldn’t let this patriotic post go by without showing off this show-stopping stunner by Kim Diehl. If you can get THIS one done by the 4th, well, let’s just say you’re a much speedier quilter than I am!

  • I place a flag on my front porch, put a red and white checked tablecloth on my dining room table, and make burgers for my husband to grill.

  • Since my birthday is July 7( my Mom told me I was late and due on the 4th). I have gone all out with swags, pinwheels and all and some years, I do a bit less!

  • Guess you could say we go all out. R-W-B is one of my favorite combinations so it is ALL over the house and then we go outside. There’s also the boat dock and then a parade! Anything goes there, if it has wheels, jazz it up and off we go – kids LOVE it! Yep sounds like all out for here!

  • The one item that must be part of my July is our American Flag. Then reds, blues, and whites are sprinkled throughout my home.

  • I go all out for the whole summer patriotic season. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, honoring all in the USA!!! Have fun with red white and blue!

  • I usually decorate with patriotic colors for Memorial Day and then add a little more as the 4th of July approaches. Of course it includes a flag out front and some red, white and blue touches in the kitchen. This year I am working on a table runner for the dining room table( I better hurry up!)

  • I like to start my Red White And Blue decorating around June 14 for Flag Day and leave it out through July. I have wall hangings, table toppers and a table cloth I made with matching window toppers . An outdoor garden flag and the flag on the flag pole. It’s just a fun time to show our colors. Not everything is the red white and blue colors.

some small items, red, white and blue candles…just fun things to celebrate the 4th.

  • My husband and I recently purchased a reproduction flag with 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies. We love American history and deeply appreciate the wisdom and sacrifices made by the early settlers and founding fathers of our great nation.

  • I don’t really do anything special – but I have patriotic placemats that are used from Memorial Day through the 4th of July. My goal is to make a patriotic table runner soon as my coffee tables have various runners for different holidays, just no patriotic ones yet.

  • I like flags on the front porch and a RWB picnic quilt. Simple but striking.

    —Lorrie on June 13, 2017
  • I get excited for the July 4th celebration, perhaps I go overboard with decorating. The community has a parade, baseball games and live music and fireworks. Lucky us found a home two blocks away and I love the party.

  • We get a flag placed in our yard by a local club (we pay for so many holidays to have the flag placed) and then the money is used for scholarships for graduating seniors to go to college.

  • I have some red, white and blue in almost every room and then I add my bears and blueberries from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Only a few small flags outside.

—Louise Mease on June 18, 2017
  • I go all out. I have a little red white and blue in every room. And several things outside along with flags everywhere!

—Welton Renee on June 18, 2017
  • Our flag flies high all year long, properly lit at night. Our bedroom has been decorated in red, white and blue, with some tan thrown in for many years. Whenever I think of changing the decor, I can’t think of anything I’d rather have. For the actual 4th of July, I don’t decorate unless you can call my flag cake I’m always requested to make decorating 🙂

Paula Hedges on June 18, 2017
  • I love to decorate in the summer with red, white and blue patriotic pieces. My grand daughters help with the theme, too.
