NEW: Summertime Quilt for Folk-Art Fun! (+ giveaway)

Summer is such a delightful season full of sunshine and flowers. How fun it would be to capture that sweet summertime feeling in a quilt to enjoy all year long! That’s exactly what Jan Patek has done in her book Sunny Days.

Ideal for displaying on a bed or sofa—or anywhere you’d like to add a splash of quilted sunshine—the queen-size Sunny Days quilt features 14 beautiful block designs. And this fun-to-stitch sampler is made one block or border at a time, so you can easily start and stop to fit more sewing into your day. Along the way, you’ll stitch delightful summertime motifs, including a charming scene under a summer moon, pretty pineapples, tall sunflowers, and more.

The pineapples stand for hospitality.Jan Patek

“The baskets in my quilts represent quilting.” Jan Patek

“If you’re going to have a garden and flowers, they have be to be pollinated, so you need bees.” Jan Patek

Half the fun is putting your favorite fabrics in a starring role. This fanciful folk-art design invites you to make use of everything from large-scale florals to stripes, plaids, solids, and batiks.

“The stars represent the celestial—God.” Jan Patek

You can use Jan’s easy techniques for needle-turn appliqué or your own favorite appliqué method to make the blocks. For each block, you’ll find a full-color photo, how-to instructions, and full-sized patterns, so there’s no need to enlarge them. You can start creating your Sunny Days quilt right away!

Here’s Jan to tell us the inspiration behind Sunny Days!

As usual for quilts I design, Sunny Days is about my life, and my life revolves around my home and family and life in the country through the seasons.

When we moved into our house 46 years ago, our neighbors, Georgie Farney and Russ Stinson (sister and brother), brought us vegetables from the garden Russ grew each summer. And Georgie brought flowers. They said that since we didn’t move in until June, we wouldn’t have had time to get a garden started so they thought they’d help us out. Russ grew a garden each summer that produced enough vegetables to feed everyone in Caldwell County where we live.

I told my husband, Pep, that I wanted an herb garden and a chicken house. My grandparents had a house that, at the time, was on the outskirts of Kansas City, and my grandfather raised chickens. I had always loved gathering the eggs and listening to the chickens “sing.”

"One of the things I love about summer is that there’s more time to appliqué. Then you can leave the quilting for winter when you want the warmth." Jan Patek

My mother sewed—she made clothes—and was very good at it. Me, not so much. The clothes I sewed never fit. Georgie made quilts, and quilts don’t have to fit. I asked her to teach me how to make a quilt. At that time I thought there was only one pattern for a quilt—imagine my surprise when she started teaching me!

The fall after we moved into our house, my mother brought iris bulbs that had been handed down from her grandmother. Those irises are the basis of my fabric line “Audra’s Iris Garden” and flowers are almost always in my quilts. And of course, my children grew up as children do, got married, and provided me with grandchildren.

So—God, nature, home and family, quilting—a life filled with Sunny Days.  😊

Thanks, Jan, for an inside look at your inspiration!

  • What a great quilt design! It would look perfect hanging on my wall behind my long arm. The walls have been empty since we moved in 6 years ago. Shameful, I know, for a quilter to have empty walls. Thanks for the opportunity to win the book.

  • My den could really use some colour! It has bookcases, built-in, with glass in the doors, a trunk, handmade, over 100 years old, and a nine foot oak church pew! While the books add a bit of colour, it really needs a BIG splash of brightness to make it more cozy!

  • oh my, I live in the in-law apartment of my house and my son and DIL and grandbabies upstairs. It truly needs some quilty love in their space, but they are into grays and black and moody stuff, and I’m reduced to only holiday quilted runners up there, sigh! My apartment could use more sunshine, but I’m already overstuffed, with quilts, with rescued vintage baby quilts, not to mention my quilt studio wanna-be! But I love Jan’s thoughts on why she quilts and putting vignettes of her life into each one. Thanks for sharing the inspiration!

  • Is there a place in any home that couldn’t use a cheerful quilt? I’ve made quilts for bedrooms, living rooms, office/dens, family rooms, hallways/stairways, kitchens, dining rooms, laundry/mud rooms, screened porches and, yes, even bathrooms! And that doesn’t take into account the homes of my children, grandchildren, sisters, nieces & nephews, friends, co-workers or my daughter’s Airbnb units!. Any room in my house would love the addition of another beautiful quilt!

I try to keep fresh flowers in the room but this is not always possible. The furniture is in tones of brown and the color of the quilt would fit in beautifully. It would look great on the back of the sofa so when you enter the room you see sunshine.
