New from Kim Diehl – plus a half-off Kim deal! (+ giveaway)

When it comes to scrap quilting, there are many amazing designers to admire, and there are oodles of quilt patterns that inspire us to break out our scrap baskets. But Kim Diehl? Her scrappy quilts are pure fabric magic. Her mastery of the art—all the way down to her scrap binding—has compelled thousands upon thousands of quilters to create. The enchanting, warm, “make-do” feel she’s perfected has always been the focus of every quilt she creates. Put simply, Kim turns quilt scraps into the kind of quilts that make a house a home.

Did you know that the second quilt Kim ever made was an original design, and that her third quilt won American Patchwork & Quilting magazine’s 1998 Pieces of the Past quilt challenge? Since then, she’s authored six books, designed several fabric collections for Henry Glass, and taught quiltmaking all over the country (visit Kim’s website). But while Kim’s quiltmaking career has grown, her designs have stayed close to her roots: tried-and-true traditional patchwork, combined with sweet appliquéd details (using her signature invisible machine-appliqué technique).

Kim’s latest book, Simple Charm, features 13 new designs filled with all the beauty and cheer that scrappy quilts bring (see the projects at the bottom of this post). With the release of Kim’s new book, we’re thrilled to announce a special, limited-time offer:

Choose from any of Kim’s best-selling books (note that her first book, Simple Blessings, is back by popular demand as an eBook), plus her fun note cards and recipe tin.

All of the above items are 50% off when you purchase Kim’s latest book, Simple Charm. And remember, whenever you buy a printed book at ShopMartingale, you get the eBook version FREE.** See a full listing of Kim’s books and products at our site.

  • Kim’s style is uniquely hers in a world of sometimes look alikes. It has touches of primitive but with some fabrics can look very contemporary. I would love to have this book in my collection of her books. That would mean i only needed to purchase one more to have the full set!

I especially like the Welcome Wagon yo yo quilt in Simple Graces, but the project I like most is from the August 2002 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting called Small Traditions. Little patchwork pillows that can be used to brighten any area of the home. I’ve made many of them for myself, and they also make perfect gifts to whip up when you’re in a hurry.

  • Of all the quilt designers I’ve encountered through their books, Kim is my favorite. The colors she uses are so rich and warm! I have her first two books and look at the pictures all the time. My favorite of her quilt designs is "Idaho Farm Girl Lap Quilt", from "Simple Traditions". It has a striking graphic quality yet such pleasing soft colors. I love her quilts that combine geometric piecing with floral applique. It’s nice to see how appreciated Kim’s design and quilting talents have become, in a relatively short time.

    DianeH on May 9, 2012
  • The cover quilt on Simple Graces is what made me buy that book and I plan to make that quilt one of these days.

I bought Simple Blessings for its cover quilt, too, but I have enough applique projects in line to exceed my expected lifetime, so I doubt that I will ever get that done.

In Simple Charm, I love Spice Pantry for its quaintness and its smaller size makes it a "do-able" prospect for me. My quilts tend to be oversized queen and king monsters but Spice Pantry is perfect for the couch.

Choosing favorites from Kim’s projects is difficult because her color sense and her whimsical twists on traditional designs make all of her projects attractive to me.

  • As a quilter for over 40 years, my love for different quilt designers has waxed and waned. Until Kim Diehl! I instantly fell in love with her designs, color palette, and mix of piecing and applique. I have nearly all of her books and have even cut her patterns out of quilt magazines. But my favorite design is "Thistle Thicket". Two years ago for my birthday my sister made it for me in my favorite colors and sent it across the country as a surprise! It is the first quilt given to me since my grandmother gave me a quilt as a child! So a quilt made by my sister from my favorite designer…heaven!

  • I’m a beginning quilter so I wasn’t familiar with Kim, but I love what I’ve seen!

  • I don’t have a favorite book or pattern. I love Kim’s choice of colors and how her patterns are easy to put together. When you open a book Kim wrote there’s so much eye candy, you want to make every quilt, every single quilt. I’m not into modern quilts or crazy fabric patterns, Kim’s color choices POP. I’d love to win Kim’s new book! ;-> Toni Anne

  • I had never seen Kim’s books before untill it was mentioned on a blog I was stalking. I would love to win her book. I am always looking for ways to use up my scraps. I sew a lot of kids clothes so I accumulate a ton of scraps for quilting.

  • I was lucky enough to see Kim Diehl do a trunk show of her work a couple of years ago and I can honestly say that I love all of her projects! Especially her applique…it’s amazing!

  • Kim’s designs are just my style!!! I love the colors that she uses– so cozy!!! I can’t choose a favorite— every one of her patterns has something about it that makes me think *it’s* my favorite! 🙂
