Mini quilt-along begins! Mix It Up with the Moda All-Stars (+giveaway)

By Karen Johnson

Need a quick, easy, and cute project to kick off the year? Join me in a four week quilt-along, where we’ll stitch a mini version of Carrie Nelson’s Bubble and Froth quilt from the book Moda All-Stars: Mix it Up! The 70½" x 70½" quilt in Moda All-Stars: Mix it Up! is made from Cake Mix Recipe 4. Our mini version, a 28½" x 28½" quilt, will use Cupcake Mix Recipe 2. Cute, eh?

Bubble and Froth, the original 70½" x 70½" quilt by Carrie Nelson

Bubble and Froth, 28½" x 28½"—Cupcake size!

Although you need the book to complete the mini version, Carrie has provided basic instructions for cutting the pieces for the mini quilt here. Thanks, Carrie!

Week 1

Simply download the mini instructions, choose your charm pack, and grab the book and one Cupcake Mix Recipe 2.

Here’s what I used for my mini Bubble and Froth:

I took all of the lights from each charm pack and added a BasicGrey Grunge from my stash for the background. Since the mini quilt requires only one charm pack, I’ve got enough darks left over to make a second mini quilt!

You can follow along for instructions each week by checking back here or watching us on Facebook and Instagram. Be sure to post pictures of your progress and use the tag #mixitupqal so we can see your posts. Hint: there may be another prize at the end, so be sure to use #mixitupqal to be entered.

DID YOU KNOW? "Moda is donating royalties for this book to Feeding America. With your purchase of the book, you’re helping end hunger around the United States. Together, for every dollar we donate, we’ll be helping provide as many as 10 meals for hungry children and adults."  Lissa Alexander.

We’ll draw a winner one week from today. Enter to win by telling us in the comments:

  • I’m somewhere between a quilt along joiner and finisher. It depends on how much the project keeps my interest. If the steps are too long or complicated I usually stall out.

  • I’m a quilt along newbie. I’ve copied quilt along instructions & patterns but don’t have a huge stash to go pull from. Therefore I want/need to go buy fabric for the project but by the time I can the project is far along with everyone else. I may be able to do this short project with scraps but still need a background. Winning the fabric would be great as I don’t buy charm packs just to have plus I’ll have to call the 2 quilt shops in my travel pattern to see who carries the cake mix papers. Thanks for the chance.

—Linda Stutzman on January 6, 2020
  • I’m between a joiner and a finisher, I suppose. I love BOM’s and QAL’s. I complete about 90% of the quilts I start and love to see all of the other quilter’s color schemes and quilting line patterns too. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to be as spontaneously active in the moment as most quilters. I make lots of quilts each year; and because of that, I must pre-schedule the designs I will create a year in advance. So By January 1st each year, I have a full line-up planned for that year; with just a little wiggle room for unexpected baby and wedding gifts to squeeze in here and there. But when I see a lovely design like this one, it immediately goes into my "next year" list; and that also becomes my go-to list if unexpected needs arise during the year. I can easily see this lovely design made into a new baby gift; so hopefully I won’t have to wait a whole year to make it. (Last year I had 6 "unexpected needs", so there’s a fair chance I’ll get to make it sometime this year. Lol! 🙂 Also, although I greatly love the way this quilt was made, I can’t afford to buy the book. So I will have to just use the simple instructions given here on this free site and try to guess how they go together. Your fabric choices are very inspiring though, and the book looks like fantastic eye candy for all of us ubber-quilting enthusiasts. Many thanks for sharing your lovely design. God bless.

I want to finish them but have not done so yet. Someday…..? I finish quite a few small charity quilts (twin and smaller) a year but tend to put off finishing quilts for my own home. I think my finished quilt tally for 2019 was about 30 or maybe a couple less. I haven’t made the final tally yet. I love being on your mailing list. I get so many fun ideas for charity quilts even from just viewing your photos. Thank you.

The thought of me receiving the fabric, creating a work of love, then giving to someone special, is a gift I give to me! My husband fully supports my dream and appreciates the time and effort that goes into making each quilt. He calls himself “my creative consultant” these days! Very blessed!

  • I would consider myself a QAL joiner but not a joiner. I want to see what everyone else is doing before I jump in!

  • I’m a quilt along newbie. I’ve saved patterns from several quilt alongs that I want to do someday but have usually had projects in the works that had a deadline when the quilt alongs started. Hope to be able to participate in one someday!

  • Oops! Well, I need to double check before I hit "submit". Should be "I’m a joiner not a finisher".

  • I’m definitely a joiner and not a finisher. My UFOs number over 20 (but less than 40).

  • Although I’ve been quilting over 40 years, I am a quilt along newbie for sure…I love that the proceeds of this book will go to feeding people. That’s a cause close to my heart! Love the book, too, so it’s a win-win!

    —Rhonda on January 11, 2020
  • I always try to make every quilt my own and have trouble doing the same thing that everyone else has done. So definitely a challenge to be a newbie!

  • As a quilt-along newbie, I enjoy following QALs to receive inspiration from what the participants are doing, but life often seems to get in the way of my active involvement. Carrie’s pattern is terrific, so this may be the QAL that I actually join and complete!

  • What is the category for someone who religiously saves every free quilt along pattern, certain that someday she will make them all? That’s me. I make a few of them, but just you wait…

  • I’m a joiner (collector) more so than a finisher. I always have great intentions but horrible follow through. With a mini version of a quilt though I’m more likely to at least get started, finishing is still a bit iffy.
