Kim-DiehlChristmas in May? Absolutely! If you’re a quiltmaker and you’d like to wrap yourself (and your family) in a little handmade goodness when the snow begins to fly, now is the PERFECT time to start planning, dreaming, and stitching for the holidays.

Simple Christmas Tidings is such a labor of love and so very special to me, because it gave me the opportunity to design and stitch a huge variety of quilts and projects using blocks and motifs loved by generations of quilters. And what an honor to share some of my favorite holiday recipes, decorating tips, and ideas that make my home sparkle during the chilliest of winter days, as well as traditions I’ve enjoyed with my family through the years.

Winter Delight Candle Mat

My very favorite holiday quilts and projects are those that don’t scream “Christmas!,” because I’m able to use and display them for the entire season (or even longer), not just for the holidays. With this in mind, you’ll find tons of classic patchwork and appliqué designs, richly hued colors in both cotton prints and wooly fabrics, and a huge variety of projects from big to small that use lots of easy techniques.

My mother used to tell me that good things come in small packages, and she was so right! It feels incredibly good to start AND finish quick little projects, and Christmas Baubles are just the thing for a dose of instant gratification. Quick-to-stitch wooly snowmen and penny ornaments, a sprinkling of fabric yo-yos, and patchwork stars can be whipped up in a jiffy. Best of all, they can be tied onto doorknobs and handles for a dollop of holiday cheer all through the house, or they can be shared with special people in your life when you tie them onto gift bags and packages. Everyone loves receiving a little homemade cheer!

Thanks so much for letting me share Simple Christmas Tidings with you. I hope you’ll take a few moments to break out your favorite holiday music, sip on a yummy beverage, and curl up in your favorite chair with the book as you dream about Christmas!

  • My house needs nothing because quilting projects for Christmas is my favourite thing to do. However, I have lots of young friends, starting out in new marriages or setting up house for the first time and have found that quilted Christmas items make just the best gifts, gratefully received by everyone. I would stock a gift cupboard stacked with quilts, stockings and ornaments to feed my need to quilt Christmas.

  • My home is in need of some new ornaments and I always make something each year for my children and grandchildren to add to their Christmas decorations each year. I did this starting with their first Christmas so that by the time they moved out on their own, they had a start on their Christmas decorations. Each year was something specific to them to make a memory.

  • This past Christmas my husband really wanted to decorate the house, above and beyond what we normally do. In January, he was going to go in for surgery, and we weren’t sure how successful it was going to be. I wasn’t prepared, as we normally don’t do a lot of decorating, so I just threw some Xmas themed fabric together on the table, got some decorative centerpieces and went from there.

This year, because I want to celebrate the success of the operation, I want a new table runner and a new tree skirt! I want to fill my house with the joy of the Christmas Season!

—Susan Burney on May 13, 2016

Since it’s not easy to visit them very often, I try to group presents and letters to send over the ocean a few times a year. Perhaps a matching table runner to go with the stockings? I think the snowmen shown on this post would go well with any of the fabrics in the give away bunch. Now that they are out of the military and living the civilian life full-time, they enjoy decorating and entertaining friends every chance they can get.

  • Each season (especially Christmas) arrives with something new to add to our home. While I make lots of gifts for family and friends the addition to our family collection of quilts, toppers or runners is always special because I make it for ME and know that someday it will pass to those I love so much. Thanks for giving us a chance to win this wonderful book and fabrics … I’ve taken several of Kim’s classes when she has been in my area … I’ve always come away having learned so much and totally energized!

  • The first Christmas-y project for 2016 (already in process) will be a chair-topper – like a table topper but is used to protect the vertical of the only chair in the living room the beagle is allowed to use (small afghans protect the seat). The two that alternate now are more summer/fall colors. Since the living room is mostly greens and reds the Christmas-y colors will work well. Kim’s book has some great projects, and I love the shades of the fabrics. Thanks for the opportunity to win, and thanks for the continued inspirations.

Our club is called "The Sew & Sews". We use donated material, threads, sewing machines, and anything anyone donates to us. We make lap size blankets, pillow cases and other small craft things to donate to local charities and hospitals. If we are chosen to win this package of goodies we will be very grateful and most thankful. Teaching kids this skill and paying it forward is so rewarding. It is a selfless act of love.

I love Kim Diehl’s colors, style and homey look of her projects. Life was a little topsy-turvy in 2015 with me breaking my shoulder, death of our beloved schnauzer and the passing of my 95 year old mother. Maybe this year a table topper for me is in order not that the shoulder allows me to sit and sew again. I love Kim’s color choices and that homespun look. It’s peaceful and reminds me of Christmas times past, but not forgotten.

Every year I make a Christmas Heirloom for each of my children. This year I will make the tree skirt from this book for my son and his family and the Snowman Shenanigans Wall Hanging for my 3 grand-daughters and a centerpiece for myself and one for my daughter. Everyone will be very happy to receive these gifts on Christmas morning. I have been quilt-making for 38 years and I hand quilt them all right down to the small items. Would be thrilled to receive this book and the 16 prints from Kim’s new fabric collection,"Winter Blessings".

  • What does my home need for Christmas? The warm, cozy feel that quilts bring! We decided to buy this home in January of 2013, remodeled the kitchen and made some other changes in the family room and formal front room, and moved into our home in August. In December, we left for eighteen months to serve a church mission in Albuquerque, NM. When we returned, we did some remodeling in the main bathroom, and painted and changed carpeting in the bedrooms. We have finally finished all the changes, and now love our home, which we feel is ours because of the changes that we’ve made. What’s missing now is the final touch: to make some table toppers, wallhangings, and quilts to make it warm and inviting. It’s easy to let time pass without looking ahead to Christmas and getting things made so they’ll be ready for the holidays. I love the colors in the fabrics you showed, and the patterns displayed. I would love to have the book!!! Table toppers always catch my eye, but I haven’t taken the time to make any, yet. I would love, love, love to have one ready to put on our table when December comes, and love the Twinkle Trees topper. I’d love to be the winner for the fabric and book!!! Thanks for sharing such great things with so many!
