  • Whaaat!! I am so sad to hear this. I have so many Martingale books and don’t know who will publish quilting books now. Sorry to see you close.

—Brenda Morton on January 5, 2023
  • This news makes me very sad. I prefer books to magazines and most definitely prefer something I can hold rather than view on a computer/phone screen. I wish you good luck on your future endeavors.

  • I’m so sorry. You’ve always published quality books. My best wishes to all of you as you all start your new adventures. You will be missed.

  • This is the last thing I expected to hear this morning. You truly will be missed. Here’s hoping you all move on to great adventures and happy lives. Thank you for all you have done for our creative community.

  • I am so sorry to see this happen. You have enriched our lives in so many ways as we have grown in our appreciation and practice of these creative arts. So much value created by one small company! As you move on to your next adventure, please know that we will continue to read and share these publications. Both the artists and apprentices among us will enjoy your works for a very long time! We will miss you!

  • Sorry to read this. I have enjoyed so many of your quilting books over the years.

—Annette Austin on January 5, 2023
  • Oh no!! This is such sad news! Nearly every quilting and embroidery book I have has been purchased from Martingale—who will be my new supplier?? Best wishes to everyone in your team. As a journalism major (1980s), I would never have predicted the current state of print media, no matter the context. Online options just aren’t the same; there’s nothing like having a book in hand.

    —Barbara W on January 5, 2023
  • Such sad news! You have always been the first place I go for quilting books. You will be missed!! You have been such a service to the quilting world and I wish you good things in your future endeavors.

  • This is just devastating news. Martingale had been such a reliable source of inspiration for so long. I wish you and your employees the best of luck, and you all need to know you will be very much missed.

  • I was truly stunned to read your announcement that Martingale Publishing would be closing. There’s nothing like curling up in a chair with a cup of tea and a real book. Your books were so often an inspiration when my muse was sulking. You will be sorely missed, and I will be checking my bookshelves for vacant spots to fill.

    —SandyMay on January 5, 2023
  • No, No, No! You can’t go out of business. You are the glue that holds everything together, making our world so creative and fun. This is so sad to hear. Thank you for 46 wonderful years of creativity and kindness. I wish everyone at Martingale a happy and creative future. Creativity will not be the same without you. I wish there was another way.

  • What happens to the books I have purchase as eBooks? Do I need to download them all as PDF’s and save them?

—Jill Voyles on January 5, 2023
  • Just received the e-mail saying you are going out of business. I am sorry to hear of this. I have many, many quilting books that I purchased from Martingale over the past 20 plus years. Had fun taking tours of the warehouse back in the day & getting great deals there. Also have had several quilting friends over the years who worked for Martingale. Sad to lose another great local business – you will be missed.
    Kindly,
    Cheryl

  • Maybe Time to either change course or look at new venues or pay more time enjoying family and friends. I understand the all encompassing experience that owning and running a long lived business demands whether you love it or not.

Congratulations for creating a great product.

  • So sorry to see this happening. I treasure all the publications I own from Martingale. I hope you are able to facilitate the authors’ transitions to other houses as you close. I hope also this decision to close is for happy reasons. 46 years is a fantastic run. Best wishes for the futures of all concerned.

  • So sad to hear this sad news. I treasure the stash of gorgeous Martingale publications I have in my quilting library here in New Zealand.

    —Janet Elspeth E on January 5, 2023
  • What a SHOCKING email this one was!!! I have been quilting since the late 90s and have learned so much from the books I have purchased from Martingale. I will cherish them that much more now that I know they just became "collector’s items". Although I have used most of my books over the years they are still in excellent condition. I agree with someone else’s review in that I prefer to have a book in my hand over a magazine any day of the week! Thanks for all of the years you have been of great service to the quilting community. You will be missed by so many!

    —Jackson on January 5, 2023
  • Such sad news. Over the years, Martingale publishing has taught so many to quilt and craft through their wonderful selection of books. Thank you for all you have done for the quilting/crafting community. You will be missed. Wishing the best for all staff members.

—Ann in NC on January 5, 2023

  • This is such awful news. Its going to be so sad to not have new Martingale books to look forward to adding to my quilting library. Thank you for the high quality books you’ve published, for educating so many of us and for giving many authors a way to share their love of quilting and crafting. With a heavy heart, wishing you the best in whatever life has to offer you next.

—Molly Spradley on January 5, 2023
  • My husband and I are both quilters and we own many Martingale books. We are sorry to learn that you will no longer be part of our cherished world. We thank you for the years of enjoyment and the skills we’ve learned because of your company.

—Marty Dzioba on January 5, 2023
  • I’m so sad to hear this news. My quilting library is filled with books that were published by Martingale, each of them an example of your company’s standards of quality and creativity. I’m so sorry for the authors, editors, and all the support staff for whom this news must be especially devastating. Please know you carry with you the appreciation of the quilting community wherever you go.

  • Thank you for publishing books that have inspired me in my quilting journey. Your shop has been a great place to find and buy books that I could not find anywhere else. I am sorry to see you close, but wish you the best in whatever you do next.

    —Verna on January 5, 2023
  • It’s already been said dozens of times but I was also shocked, stunned, and saddened to read that email. Hoping there is some plan for continuing to make these wonderful products available. Will the authors be able to transfer publishing rights?

—Carolyn Blakeney on January 6, 2023
  • I’m so sorry to read this. You are my “go to” for quilting books. I have enjoyed your sales and purchased enough for my own little quilt library. I find that there is nothing like a new quilting book to inspire me. I know that there are many others who feel the same. Best wishes to you and all your employees.

—Renee Welton on January 6, 2023
  • Many heartfelt thanks to all of you who wrote, bought, read and resold our books over the years we were in business. I did most of the photography for That Patchwork Place / Martingale since 1988. It has been one of the biggest things in my (and my family’s) life! My wife, all my kids, my first grandchild, our dogs, various pieces of furniture, our gardens, and our home have shown up in many of the books over the years.

Please know how much all of your kind words and your support over the years have meant to all of us who worked at Martingale. We did it all for you – and it’s wonderful to hear how much you appreciated and enjoyed our work!

When I retired from Martingale a few months ago – I figured up how many quilts came through my studio, their average size, etc. My estimate is that I photographed around eight acres of quilts!!

    Thanks again,
    Brent

  • I am so very sorry that you are going out of business. I wish you could stay open even if an an e-book company which would cut down on paper, printing and sourcing issues.
We have depended for many years on Martingale and so have the many, many authors you have published.

—Jacqueline Cafera on January 6, 2023
  • Like everyone else, I am heart broken to be losing such a wonderful and inspiring resource. I have many many of the quilt books that you have published. Whether I have made a quilt from them or just enjoyed looking through them, I have loved them all. In spite of being sad for me and all of my fellow crafters, I wish you well in your next phase of life. And thank you for the years you gave to us. Best wishes to you!

—Jackie Chalmers on January 7, 2023
  • The closing of Martingales is very sad news, although it is a difficult time for many publishers, Martingales has always had the highest standards with their books and beautiful photography. I will esp. miss their YouTube video trunk shows that helped so many of us decide what books to purchase. I wish all the employees the best of luck and that those who need to continue working will find a place with an equally good company. To me there is no device that is as good as holding a book made from paper and crafted with the high quality that Martingales created. Thank you to the staff for all the hours of pleasure & creativity you have inspired for your customers.

—Ellen in Oregon on January 7, 2023

  • I am so sorry to hear about you having to clo0se shop. Can you please tell me what will happen to our Ebooks? Do we need to download them? I wasn’t sure if we would still have access to them through your website after you close.
    Thank you

—angela bolinger on January 9, 2023
  • @Andrea and @Jill: You should download your eBooks and save them to your desktop or device. When you have them saved on your computer, etc., you’ll be able to access them. We’ll keep the eBooks up on ShopMartingale.com for a while–into February. We’ll send another blog with info about timing. Thank you!
