Did you know that September 9 is the most common birthday in the U.S., and that September is the busiest month for births overall? Perhaps that’s why we often find ourselves making baby quilts during the summer months!
The author of Sew Sweet Baby Quilts, Kristin Roylance, has a specialty—creating adorable baby quilts with huggable, tuggable details. You might not believe you can get the cute quilts from her book finished and wrapped in time for the baby shower. But Kristin’s speed-it-up plans make it possible!
With animated, tactile motifs such as buzzing bees and floating fish, you won’t be able to resist sewing Kristin’s darling quilts for nap time, play time, snuggle time—anytime! And today we’re sharing a bonus quilt pattern from Kristin featuring frilly flowers. Download the pattern for FREE right now, compliments of Kristin and Martingale!
Fun cotton prints, fluffy chenille fabric, dimensional petals, and bouncy rickrack combine in a cute baby quilt that’ll make mom, dad, and their new little one say, “Oh, baby!”
Kristin’s even included a tip for how she creates perfect circles for the flower centers:
Kristin says, “My favorite method for preparing appliqué circles is to use cardboard to make a template—recycled cereal boxes work great! Cut a cardboard circle the size of the appliqué. Trace the cardboard template outline onto the wrong side of the fabric. Cut out the fabric circle approximately ¼" beyond the drawn line. Hand or machine baste ⅛" from the edge of the fabric circle. Center the cardboard circle on the wrong side of the fabric circle, and then pull the basting stitches to neatly gather the fabric around the cardboard. Press the gathered edges, and then pop out the cardboard circle.
In Sew Sweet Baby Quilts you’ll find more whimsical motifs to celebrate Baby, including:

—Mindy on July 26, 2019At least 20!
—Carol on July 26, 2019I’ve made four baby quilts. One for each of my kids, two boys, one girl. My girl used her quilt for her daughter. My boys have theirs in waiting.
The fourth one, I made for a friend, her first child. I really thought that it would be appreciated, but a few weeks after I gave it to her I was in a local thrift shop and there it was for sale for $2. I bought it back. I held tears in as the young girl checked me out and commented at how beautiful the quilt was and then she told me that her Mom was a quilter and she noticed my distress and she asked me what was wrong. I took out my Drivers’ Liicense and put it by my name on the quilt label. She couldn’t believe that ‘a friend’ could be so ungrateful. I asked if she had kids and she told me she had one at home and one one the way….. so I gave her the quilt. It will be loved now, as it should be.
—Elaine Miller on July 26, 2019What a sad story with an uplifting ending, Elaine – it was meant to be hers! –Jenny
My grandchildren were too old for baby quilts by the time I started quilting. They are getting married now and are promising great grand babies. I am a newbie when it comes to baby quilts so I love the inspiration in Jenny’s book.

The last four were for my niece who has four boys. Each blanket is unique and has the child’s name stitched on it. Each also has a label. I had never quilted before, and the owners of the two quilt shops in my small town of 10,000 people were very helpful to me. Your website has also been very helpful in teaching me the skills I needed to make these six blankets. Thank you.

—Barbara DeMir on July 26, 2019I’ve lost count. I know I’ve made at least 10 as I have 10 grandkids but I know it’s way more than that since I make them for neices and nephews kids too and also just to give to friend’s kids. Love making baby quilts!
—Anne L. Rightler on July 26, 2019I’ve lost count. My husband, the scientist, mentored many young post-doctoral students and MDs who were starting their families after completing school. I would make up baby quilts when i saw a pattern or fabric I liked and store them for him to take to the new parent. It was a win-win-win situation. I got to do what I liked, he got the kudos for a great gift, and baby got a blanket. Since retirement, I have turned my efforts toward kids in need at Project Linus, hospitals, and foster care. Baby quilts are a great way to try out a new pattern or technique and to indulge in that irresistible fabric.

—Liz on July 26, 2019I’ve definitely lost count! I love making baby quilts for all the new arrivals in the family.
—Susan L. on July 26, 2019I’ve lost count since I’ve made many for ladies I have worked with. I just feel compelled sometimes to gift a gift. And my 3 grandkids have several each! Sometimes I use a panel and add borders, sometimes strips and other blocks. I love being able to finish a quilt so a smaller one helps me get that satisfaction of completion!
—Carole Vrshek on July 26, 2019I’m a newbie-no quilts yet!
—Denise V on July 26, 2019I’ve been quilting for 30+ years, and I’ve lost count. Most were fairly simple patterns – nothing elaborate, but I believe they were still appreciated. In fact, my first "quilted" baby quilt (early on I "tied" most of them), that had been given to one of my best friends for her baby, was just passed on to her first grandchild – 29 years later!
BTW, funny you should mention September as the biggest birthday month. I come from a large family (I’m the 9th of 13 kids, all single births) & 5 of my siblings were born in September. Two on Sept 14, 2 on Sept 17 (and those were the first 4 of the 13, born over a span of 7 years), then one on Sept 29 (many years later, she was the second to last of the 13).
Wow, certainly a healthy birth month for your family, Angela! –Jenny
—Angela N. on July 26, 2019My sixth grandchild is due in August and as each grandbaby gets 2 baby quilts, I have made 12. But they also get a quilt on their first and second birthday so maybe that is another 9 quilts a bit bigger than the originals. Enjoy making those special quilts

—Carol McClelland on July 26, 2019The only 2 quilts I have made so far have been a baby quilt for my 3 month old grandson and another, larger one for his 3 year old brother. I chose the fabrics and drew out the pattern for each, machine quilted them and embroidered the labels. I will be making more for donation.

—Kathy o on July 27, 2019I’ve been quilting since the 1980’s and the very first baby quilt, and my first quilt, was an Overall Sam quilt for my first son. I’ve lost count and loved making all the baby quilts but at least 30 or so. One more needs to be quilted for my little granddaughter. It’s a quilt with cute animals and it turns out that this little girls loves animals and wants to hug every cat or dog she comes in contact with. Just a guess on my part, we thought this baby was a boy.
