If you’ve tried free-motion quilting but you’re still in beginner mode . . .
If you’re ready to try some fun new motifs . . .
If you simply aren’t sure how to progress from where you are . . .
Let machine-quilting pro Lori Kennedy take you by the hand and teach you everything she knows!
Lori’s new book, Free-Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3
Let us tell you about Lori: she’s a BERNINA Ambassador, a two-time Craftsy star, and she regularly writes machine-quilting tutorials for American Quilter Magazine. She’s also filmed a two-part series about her machine-quilting techniques for Sewing With Nancy, which you can watch this September.
In short, she knows her sewing stuff!
Fun flower variations from Free-Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3
Lori’s book, Free-Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3, is chock-full of easy free-motion quilting motifs that you can add to your quilts. You’ll see more than 60 designs close up throughout every step of the process, all in detailed photographs—not illustrations—so you can clearly see what you and your quilt should be doing under the needle. More than 400 photos will guide you to success!
Learn to quilt flowers, leaves, tiny houses, and many more pictorial motifs, along with lots of easy-to-learn loops, spirals, circles, and squares. If you want your quilting to be as much a part of your quilt’s personality as your piecing, start with this book!
Speaking of personality, we love this quiltmaking quote from Lori:
Don’t you agree?
As you’ll see in her guest post below, Lori’s enthusiastic and easygoing approach to free-motion quilting will inspire you to stitch right along with her. Welcome, Lori!
I’ve been machine quilting on a domestic sewing machine for more than 20 years, and in that time I’ve concluded two things:
Free-motion quilting should be FUN!
and
Quilting motifs should add personality to our quilts.
Do YOU love machine-quilted feathers and stippling? Then you should cover your quilts in feathers and stippling galore!
But if you’re like me . . . I simply cannot stipple. I cannot stitch a wavy line that doesn’t cross over any other line and makes a quarter-turn every so often.
And I want more than feathers. I want my quilting lines to tell a story. However, I do NOT want to do a lot of marking.
I started designing my own motifs and sharing them on my blog, The Inbox Jaunt. Together, my readers and I quilted leaves and flowers as well as spirals and circles. But we didn’t stop there. We quilted stars, sailboats, hearts, and roses. We added schools of fish and little houses and trees surrounded by picket fences. All these motifs helped tell our quilting story.
Sailboat, fish, wave, and bubble motifs
On my blog I’ve offered tutorials that are easy to follow and easy to commit to muscle memory. Suddenly, challenging motifs seemed simple—just one step at a time!
That’s how Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 was born—one “Tuesday Tutorial” at a time. The book includes more than 60 motifs with step-by-step photos, all organized in six chapters for quick reference. A spiral binding allows the book to lie flat next to your sewing machine while you are stitching.
The first chapter will have you stitching in less than five minutes with my 12-step setup. Not sure about thread, batting, or marking pens? It’s all in here.
Next, you’ll find skill-building exercises to help you create the perfect stitch, as well as instructions on creating four different knots to tie off your quilting. You’ll discover why stopping points are important, as well as other tips that will refine your technique and elevate your machine quilting to the next level.
Then the fun begins—stitching the motifs and variations! Find motifs to tell YOUR story—from beginner to advanced, modern to traditional, pretty to whimsical.
Motifs from Free-Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3
Not sure how to begin? Here’s a tutorial from the book that you can start with, and it’s my favorite: Flower Power!

Meander no more—happy stitching!

Great book, easy to follow especially for non-artistic quilters like me! Love the spiral binding, for doodling or stitching.
—Brenda Estes on March 29, 2017Leaves and flowers would be my pick.
—Gilda on March 29, 2017I would like to try all of Lori’s designs. I too cannot stipple without crossing over or getting stuck on a corner or edge.
—Pat D on March 29, 2017I am one who used to rely on stippling, I can do it without thinking. Lori has inspired me to expand those skills and now I have done several pieces that don’t have one line of meandering on them! Her style of educating is easy to understand and the pictures help those of us who are visual learners. I think all of the above look like good places to move my skills to the next level!
—Mary C on March 29, 2017Sew nice to see Lori on your blog. I have been following her blog for a couple of years. She is such a good teacher!

—Rita Porter on March 29, 2017I love Lori Kennedy’s book – Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3. The design of the book is perfect- it lies flat when you open a page and is organized by type of design- loop, circle, leaves etc. which makes finding something a breeze. I was new to free motion quilting when I came across Lori’s blog. She took away the fear with her step by step instructions. The first one I used was Cool Cat- which isn’t in this book – and I wish I had a picture of the quilt I used it on! I look forward to many more books of her designs.
—Elaine Murray on March 29, 2017I love the puzzle pieces! But it looks like an awesome resource – so All of the above.

—Debbie on March 29, 2017All of the above! I follow Lori Kennedy’s blog and would love to win a copy of her book!
—Sharon on March 29, 2017Lori’s method for teaching spirals has helped me more than any other approach I’ve found (reverse spirals v forward spirals). I even stitched spirals in a quilt I finished just a few days ago! (huge step for me) Her doodle method definitely works and I can’t say enough about the spiral binding on this book – SO easy to use!!!!! I’ve purchased a few yards of solids so I can stitch my way through the designs in the book (especially the floral fills, the spiral designs, and the leaves) to create my own set of stitched samples. Fingers crossed that there is a follow up book with even more of Lori’s process, doodles, and designs already in the works!
—Quiltdivajulie on March 29, 2017Love them all, but find myself drawn to the floral designs the most.
—Judy on March 29, 2017Would love to learn ‘All of the Above’. I am very interested in the ‘Leaves and Flowers’. Will try the free tutorial.

—Donna Wentzel on March 29, 2017I bought the book. The layout is superb, the information is clear and there is a lot of it. I have followed Lori’s blog for years and the book will be a reference next to my longarm. However, one thing is a huge problem for me. The pink color background samples are practically illegible in contrast with the stitching. On most of the pages, I have to go over the stitching lines with a black marker. Most of the other color backgrounds are ok, could use some improvement but the pinks are very difficult to follow the stitching.

—ADK Kate on March 29, 2017I love the random/different flowers next to each other!

—Judy on March 29, 2017I want to learn all of the above
—Rebecca Wright on March 29, 2017I would like to learn which is my favorite style to quilt! Have enjoyed Lori’s article in AQS September 2014 magazine. —Joyce on March 29, 2017all of the above. Lori may just inspire me to try free motion again.
—Margaret Dalmer on March 29, 2017I love Lori’s tutorials would like to win her book. I have been quilting for many years but new to free motion quilting.
—Anita Spicer on March 29, 2017Great job on the book Martingale! Quality paper and I love the spiral to lay flat by my machine. What a great idea to share a page to try first. The article here describes and shows perfectly what the book is like. This is a super book.

—Janet Licari on March 29, 2017This is the book I’ve been waiting for! I’ve been quilting four or five years on a domestic sewing machine stippling, doodling, & outlining. —janet g on March 29, 2017Loops, lines, and spirals! Gorgeous!
—Linda DiVall on March 29, 2017I bought an autographed copy of Lori’s book and have followed her blog for about one year. I sew/quilt on an older Bernina, but also have a Nolting 18″ longarm. Her teaching methods can be practiced on both a domestic or longarm. Many of her tutorial designs can be made larger or smaller, narrow and simple or made into wider designs by adding a second or third pass to make them look complex. Her designs look so professional (even when simple) because she does not cross lines, but leaves a space, so that they appear to float. I definitely would want her to publish another book! I heard she might expand into ruler work.
—Jane on March 29, 2017All of the above, of course. This new book contains a plethora of very usable designs.

Translation: All of the above! But especially loops, lines and spirals. AND ALL. It is great as are the pages of each design.
—Margarita on March 29, 2017It looks exciting. Can someone tell me the difference between this book and Pat Sloan’s new machine quilting book. I am a real beginner and donot have access to classes near me. help and thank you
—marywallis soetebier on March 29, 2017I want to try them all – looks like such fun!
—Terri on March 29, 2017All of the above. It all depends on the fabric and the quilt design. Stippling is ok but it has its place, and too much can become tedious to do and can detract from the quilt design rather than enhance it. Lori’s quilting style and her teaching style are both quite approachable. I have been enjoying FMQ for many years, but still learn from every book, article, show, or class that comes my way. The spiral binding on her book will definitely make it easier to leave the book open for reference while learning or fine-tuning a particular motif.
—Jane on March 29, 2017All of the above. Lori makes it look so easy!
—Judyk on March 29, 2017The one I thought most intersting was the interlocking puzzle pieces to do as a row with a tshirt quilt in honor of autism or just for fun

Thanks for the chance to win this book. I’m fairly new at free-motion quilting so this would be a great asset to me.
—Becky Banet on March 29, 2017I would love to be able to do all sorts of machine quilting motifs on my home machine ( a Pfaff 7570 which I adore!). Currently, I use invisible nylon up top and Aurifil in the bobbin. I do loads of straight stitching (diagonal diamonds, crosshatching, etc.), but I cannot figure out how to do the lovely motifs in your post today on a large quilt. I never do anything smaller these days than 60″ by 80″. My last finished project was a queen-size bed quilt. How can I do this stuff on something that large? I would love to learn!!
—Kathryn Ash on March 29, 2017all of the above. I am 72 and just started free motion. —Elaine C on March 31, 2017I’m definitely in the "All the above" category. I love seeing Lori’s quilting on Pinterest, and having her book would really help me buckle down and improve my free motion quilting. Thanks for the chance to win.

—Carol Smith on March 31, 2017What a perfect solution this would be for me……..so far, I have only mastered stippling and stitch in the ditch, and would love to be able to expand with so many more designs. My stars are wonky, as are any trees I have tried. This would be such a good boost for me. Thank you for this opportunity. I definitely need good instruction!!

I am an artist so I am familiar with rote learning, doing the same thing over and over until it is totally natural to you. I have been free motion quilting almost from the start of my learning to quilt, but I really want to become expert at it. Thanks so much for this opportunity.
