“Star Bright” quilt
“Star Bright,” alternate colorway
Best of all? You’ll never struggle when choosing colors for these black-and-white beauties—bold contrasts make fabric selection a cinch. Thirteen projects show you how to easily make color the star of the show—it’s all here in black and white.
Ready to sew a color-splashed quilt all your own? Meet designer and online quilt-shop owner Jackie Kunkel—she’s the author of Splash of Color and our guest writer today!
Details of quilts from Splash of Color
My name is Jackie Kunkel and I’m the author of Splash of Color: A Rainbow of Brilliant Black-and-White Quilts. This book was such a joy for me to create. I LOVE black and white fabrics and everything bright, bold, and rainbow-like.
My love for mixing pops of color with black and white fabrics goes way back. In 2008, I began The Black and White Quilt Challenge Project for quilters who shared that love. You’ll find lots of inspiration there, as we had 100 contributors!
My love for these fabric combos continued to grow. That led me to draft a proposal for a book with the same focus, and that led to Splash of Color!
“Proud Mary” quilt and alternate colorway
I’ve collected black and white fabrics over many years and they are plentiful in my stash. When you pair bright fabrics with black and white they really POP! In Splash of Color I talk about which kinds of prints and colors work well together, which don’t, and why.
Examples of white on black, black on white, and multicolor prints on black or white.
The first quilt I made for Splash of Color was “Lava Lamps.” This is probably my favorite quilt, as there are so many design possibilities within just two simple shapes.
If you look closely, you’ll see a variety of multicolor prints on black and white. Because of the distinct black and white backgrounds, it’s easy to create a fantastic design.
One vision I had for Splash of Color was to have my quilting friends participate. I asked each one which pattern she’d like to make and then gave each of them guidelines for making an alternate version. For “Seeing Spots,” I gave my friend Fran the template and asked her to create a black, white, and rainbow quilt.
She did. But instead of simply following my original layout, she came up with an incredible new design using the same colors and shapes! She simply changed the value placement to turn a hexagon quilt into a strippy diamond design.
There’s a lot to see and learn in Splash of Color, and a lot of fun quiltmaking to be had. Enjoy, and happy quilting!
