A new quilt-along 🤗 Join us to make a mini sampler quilt!

When Sheryl Johnson’s first book, Temecula Quilt Company: Quirky Little Quilts was released, I was so excited. This book is totally my jam. It has quilts made from reproduction fabrics. Quilts that have a make-do quality. Quilts that are all little. Just what I loved about the antique quilts that first inspired me to start quilting.

Below is the first pattern I’ve made from Sheryl’s book. It’s called Indiana Indigo:

Sheryl's Indiana Indigo quilt Karen's Indiana Indigo quilt
Sheryl’s version of Indiana Indigo on the left and my version on the right, from
Quirky Little Quilts

I made my version of the quilt top on a Saturday afternoon, and the following weekend I machine quilted it and attached the binding. That’s my kind of quilting—fun to make but doesn’t require a huge time commitment!

Choosing fabrics and getting ready to cut; switching my old rotary blade for a fresh OLFA Endurance blade for this quilt!

Indiana Indigo quilt
My finished quilt: fun and done!

While we publish many quilting books each year at Martingale, books that offer new techniques, new ideas, and new designs to suit all tastes and skill levels, Quirky Little Quilts really spoke to me. That’s why, after making my first project from the book, I knew I wanted to make another.

Joyful Jumble quilt
Another fun quilt from the book: Joyful Jumble

Rather than sewing alone, I thought it would be fun to host a quilt-along—and you’re invited! Don’t worry; this won’t require lots of time. And it won’t last all year. In fact, we’re going to make the quilt on the cover of the book, Shoofly Sampler, starting on Monday, March 25, and we’ll be finished by the end of April.

Shoofly Sampler quilt
Join us to make Sheryl’s Shoofly Sampler quilt

Each week for four weeks, we’ll make four or five of one type of block. The quilt features Nine Patches, Shoofly blocks, Birds in the Air, and Old Favorite blocks. Because all the blocks are just 3″ finished, the seams are short and sewing time will be quick!

If you want to join the fun but don’t yet own a copy of Quirky Little Quilts, you have 17 days to get your copy, pick out some scraps from your stash—or heck, treat yourself to some new fabrics. You only need small amounts for the blocks. And if reproduction fabrics aren’t your favorite, make the pattern using fabrics you love. One of our staff members will be using Corey Yoder’s Strawberry Jam collection (see right) for Moda—light and fresh colors!

T is for Temecula quilt
A favorite on social media: T is for Temecula

Each week, those of us at Martingale who are making this quilt will post photos of our progress on Facebook and Instagram. And yes, even Quirky Little Quilts author Sheryl Johnson will be joining in and making a whole new version of her Shoofly Sampler. I can’t wait to see what fabrics she uses!

The week of April 22, we’ll finish up the project by joining the blocks into our quilt tops, which coincidentally, just happens to be the start of National Craft Book Week! (More on that coming soon . . .)

Temecula Quilt Company - Quirky LIttle QuiltsSo, here’s what you need to do to join Martingale’s mini-sampler quilt-along:

1. Buy a copy of Temecula Quilt Company: Quirky Little Quilts wherever quilt books are sold (when you purchase the book at our website, we’ll send you a link to download the eBook version for free).

2. Dig into your stash and choose your fabrics.

3. Get ready to sew starting March 25.

Be sure to use the hashtag #QuirkyLittleQuiltsQAL when you post about your progress on Facebook and Instagram so we can see, swoon, and share!

Are you inspired to sew a “quirky” little quilt with us?

  • Yes—I’ll be there with you on March 25!
  • I hope to—sounds like a wonderful way to carve out some sewing time.
  • Not sure yet—but it sounds like a lot of fun!

Tell us in the comments—and if you’ve made up your mind to join us, we’ll see you on Instagram and Facebook soon!

  • I plan to try the quilt along. I am incurably ill, recliner chair/bed bound, so I will be sewing everything by hand. I like the little quilts in the book, however, I never cared for reproduction fabrics. I am having trouble figuring out what fabrics to use even though I have a huge stash of all kinds and colors of fat quarters and half-yard cuts (maybe that’s the problem – too much stash)! I also will not do Facebook or Instagram, so I hope the quilt along will be meaningful without them. This will be my first attempt to try a quilt along. Looking forward to the 25th!

Great news, Carol – so glad you chose us for your first quilt-along! –Jenny

  • Does anyone know what time this is starting?

Hi Lynne, each day we’ll be posting about the QAL to our Facebook and Instagram pages, with a little wrap up on Fridays here at the blog. You can post about your progress anytime, and we suggest checking our social media daily! –Jenny

  • I want to participate in this fun, quick project. I love making miniature quilts and this is a great little book with lots of fun patterns. My only problem is that I do not have an Instagram account or any idea how to use one. Is it possible to simply post pictures on the Facebook page?

Hi Kelly, absolutely! Just make sure to tag your post with #QuirkyLittleQuiltsQAL so we’ll see it, and you’re all set! Hope you’ll be able to sew along! –Jenny

  • You said (above) that you would have an e-mail post on the 25th with instructions on how to proceed for those of us who do not use Facebook or Instagram. I received no e-mail – nada. I will have to do the patterns in the book by myself. It will not be a sew along if I am not communicated with until the week is over!

Hi Carol Ann – we posted about the quilt-along yesterday, here: https://blog.shopmartingale.com/quilting-sewing/quirky-little-quilts-mini-sampler-quilt-along/

Perhaps you subscribe to our weekly digest that arrives in your inbox each Friday? And we will have a weekly roundup each Friday at the end of our posts. You can follow the hashtag #quirkylittlequiltsQAL here: https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/quirkylittlequiltsqal/

Hope this helps, but please let us know if you have more questions! –Jenny
