A new quilt-along 🤗 Join us to make a mini sampler quilt!

When Sheryl Johnson’s first book, Temecula Quilt Company: Quirky Little Quilts was released, I was so excited. This book is totally my jam. It has quilts made from reproduction fabrics. Quilts that have a make-do quality. Quilts that are all little. Just what I loved about the antique quilts that first inspired me to start quilting.

Below is the first pattern I’ve made from Sheryl’s book. It’s called Indiana Indigo:

I made my version of the quilt top on a Saturday afternoon, and the following weekend I machine quilted it and attached the binding. That’s my kind of quilting—fun to make but doesn’t require a huge time commitment!

My finished quilt: fun and done!

While we publish many quilting books each year at Martingale, books that offer new techniques, new ideas, and new designs to suit all tastes and skill levels, Quirky Little Quilts really spoke to me. That’s why, after making my first project from the book, I knew I wanted to make another.

Rather than sewing alone, I thought it would be fun to host a quilt-along—and you’re invited! Don’t worry; this won’t require lots of time. And it won’t last all year. In fact, we’re going to make the quilt on the cover of the book, Shoofly Sampler, starting on Monday, March 25, and we’ll be finished by the end of April.

Each week for four weeks, we’ll make four or five of one type of block. The quilt features Nine Patches, Shoofly blocks, Birds in the Air, and Old Favorite blocks. Because all the blocks are just 3″ finished, the seams are short and sewing time will be quick!

If you want to join the fun but don’t yet own a copy of Quirky Little Quilts, you have 17 days to get your copy, pick out some scraps from your stash—or heck, treat yourself to some new fabrics. You only need small amounts for the blocks. And if reproduction fabrics aren’t your favorite, make the pattern using fabrics you love. One of our staff members will be using Corey Yoder’s Strawberry Jam collection (see right) for Moda—light and fresh colors!

Each week, those of us at Martingale who are making this quilt will post photos of our progress on Facebook and Instagram. And yes, even Quirky Little Quilts author Sheryl Johnson will be joining in and making a whole new version of her Shoofly Sampler. I can’t wait to see what fabrics she uses!

The week of April 22, we’ll finish up the project by joining the blocks into our quilt tops, which coincidentally, just happens to be the start of National Craft Book Week! (More on that coming soon . . .)
