Staff favorite: 45-degree angles conquered—perfect every time (+ sale!)

Martingale staff favorites

Did you know that 80% of our staff sews, knits, crochets, or crafts in their spare time? We’re always testing the books and tools we carry—and boy oh boy, do we have some favorites. Our staff members want to share their enthusiasm with you, so today we’re launching our “Staff Favorites” series!

Here’s customer-service manager Tracy to tell us about one of her favorite tools—Clearly Perfect Angles by Kari M. Carr—along with a special sale on Kari’s books! See sale details below.

How to make quilt binding

Do you hate making binding? I used to! I’m always so excited to finish my quilts, but then I dread the last step—making the binding. I find sewing the 45° angles so tedious. I just want to sit with my lovely quilt on my lap and do the hand sewing.

Clearly Perfect AnglesThankfully a popular teacher and Martingale author, Kari Carr, came up with a sewing-seam guide that has made my quilting life so much easier. No longer do I dread making binding! I know I can do it quickly and correctly the first time. Clearly Perfect Angles can be used with Kari’s book Twice As Nice, but you can also use it anytime you need to sew a 45° angle: to make perfect half-square triangles, flying-geese units, mitered borders, and more.

AND BINDINGS! No more marking with pencil—no more pinning! Just put Clearly Perfect Angles on your machine and sew away. Clearly Perfect Angles includes both a quarter-inch seam guide and a 45° seam-allowance guide, plus it clings to your machine so that you can put it on and take it off whenever you want. I always leave it on my machine so I can make half-square triangles fast and accurately at any time. And I can make binding whenever I want to! And now I don’t dread it!

  • I’m trying to purchase the Clearly Perfect Angle tool and it shows full price in the cart – is there a code? Also – shipping is $6.00 for this item. Is it possible that there is an adjustment to that since this is not fabric or a book?? I live in Washington state. Thanks!

    Hi Elizabeth,
We goofed and didn’t get the sale up on the site in time. It has been fixed so your price should show up correctly now along with the free shipping.

  • Clearly Perfect Angles looks like an easier-to-see version of Pam Bono’s The Angler, which I bought years ago and used about three times. My sewing table has a Lucite insert that surrounds the arm of my sewing machine. I put a strip of blue masking tape on the underside of the Lucite insert to mark that sewing line.

My favorite ‘gadget’ is Eleanor Burns’ 6-1/2″ Triangle Square Up Ruler. Other companies may make something similar. I prefer the cut large/then trim method for half-square triangles. The Square Up Ruler makes trimming them MUCH easier.

  • MY ROTARY CUTTER although I think I have every ruler known to exist and I love my little rotating mats, it is that cutter I love. I can’t imagine doing this with a pair of scissors.

  • Unable to order Clearly Perfect Angle tool without incurring $6.00 shipping fee. Is there a code I should be using?

Barbara, no special code. The shipping will drop off during check out. ~Cornelia/Customer Service

  • Ok, this is now my favorite gadget….It used to be my sewing machine, but after viewing the video, I am excited to get my new sewing tool in the mail….Thank you…

  • Love reading about and seeing demos for favorite gadgets! Thanks so much for launching this series! Can’t wait to see your favorites.

For those who use safety pins – my favorite gadget is the Kwik Klip by Paula Jean. It will save your fingers and speed up the process of both inserting and removing safety pins.

And speaking of Eleanor Burns (see Nann’s previous comment) – I also love her Flying Geese procedure and Rulers.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE Eleanor Burns’ Triangle square up ruler also….I have 2 of them and when I misplace one I panic…..it really saves a lot of time in squaring up those HST units!

    —Rosalie on April 24, 2014
  • My favorite gadget is June Tailor’s Shape Cut Ruler. I feel I get a more precise measurement of binding strips and sashings than when moving the ruler after every cut.

—Virginia in AK on April 24, 2014
  • Any of my Omnigrid rulers. The only rulers I use! I love their accuracy.

  • Hi, I tried to place an order today using a Martingale gift certificate that I received several months ago when I won a contest describing a community volunteer quilt group I am involved in. I keep getting a response that my gift certificate code is not valid. The code I received was GCONQC4GXE1CBK . It expires June 30, 2014. How can I use this certificate if the order site will not accept it?

Ann, I will reply to you via private email. ~Cornelia/Customer Service

  • This is the same thing as the angler that has been out for a very long time now.

—charlene Hamby on April 24, 2014
  • I tried to order the Clearly Perfect Angles, but it said there were zero left in stock. Will you be getting more in, and are you going to have a rain check if you do? Thank you, it looks like a really wonderful tool! My favorite tool right now is my sewing machine, but who knows, this may bump it into second!

Hi Susan, we are so sorry-the demand far exceeded the supply and we are permanently sold out. ~Cornelia/Customer Service

  • My favourite gadget is my Roxanne steel thimble. I’ve been using it for 16 years and wouldn’t be without it.

    —Kayt on April 24, 2014
  • Even tho they are sold out can I still order the Clearly Perfect Angles since April 30 is next week?

Hi Lea, I’m so sorry, but we are not going to get getting any more in stock. We just had no idea that they would sell out so quickly. ~Cornelia/Customer Service

    —Lea on April 25, 2014
  • Would love to be able to get one of the Clearly Perfect Angles…will there be more available in the future?

  • I love my Square in a Square ruler! It’s great for trimming all kinds of blocks and maintaining that all-important point.

—Linda Towers on April 26, 2014
  • I have had the 45 degree tool for at least 6 years and absolutely love it and could not do without it. In fact, I bought a new one because I have used mine so much that the lines are just about worn off. One of the best tools ever. With it making binding has become a pleasure. As soon as I finish my quilt top, I make my binding and then take the top to be quilted.

  • If you look online, you will be able to find other websites where you can buy the Clearly Angles tool
