  • The biggest hurdle I faced was learning how to make the sock in the first place…..I tried when I was 16…then again when I was 25….and then last year at the age of 48 finally achieved success….a pair of socks that could actually be worn…..and as of today am making my 43rd pair……now to face my next sock hurdle….what color to choose for the next pair of socks……

  • The biggest hurdle I face in sock knitting is gauge! I knit very loosely, so any sock pattern that calls for 1s or smaller I just stay away from. But I’ve done some really lovely boot sock patterns in worsted weight!

  • I have to agree with Nancy and Cassy on this one…starting IS still the hurdle to overcome. I have some wool, needles and books (and now this one due to the great offer) but admit attempting it is still too intimidating. When it comes to knitting, gauge is always an issue for me too but my problem is the opposite of Cassie, mine tends toward being too tight.

So I took great comfort in Darlene’s post — I have faith that one day this too will be one of those hurdles I look back on and wonder why I waited so long to tackle!

  • I have always had a love for socks of all types – I was intimidated by double pointed needles but always wanted to learn to knit my own socks – When I retired I bought a book called "I Can’t Believe I’m Knitting Socks", some DPNs and some sock yarn and just dove in. My first pair were a little weird and the toe grafting had two holes (which I later darned together) but I still have that pair and I still wear them. I have a copy of "Sensational Knitted Socks" and I love it – I have read it through several times and use it for reference all the time. My advice: Get your materials gathered and jump in – it is fun and rewarding – my family and friends are all clamoring for my next pair. I have a rule – one pair for me and one pair to give away. Such fun!

Great advice, rkgrandma – just jump in! 🙂 –Jenny
