Bathtime = playtime! Crochet water-friendly toys

Martingale's Knit and Crochet Friday

Crochet from Bathtime BuddiesIf you’ve spent any time around kids this summer, you know: kids LOVE water! Whether it’s in the pool or in the tub, kids + water = maximum fun.

Megan Kreiner, author of the wildly popular Crochet a Zoo, noticed how much her little ones, James and Emily, loved bath time. So she created a collection of crocheted tub toys, making clever use of sponges and other tub-friendly materials.

Today Megan is here to share her newest book, Bathtime Buddies—and a few extra-adorable photos of James and Emily enjoying her underwater creations. Welcome, Megan!

Megan KreinerIn my latest book, Bathtime Buddies, I took my inspiration from two water-loving bathing beauties: James and Emily. Imaginative play is often the major attraction during bath time, so my newest collection features a colorful array of sea creatures that love the water almost as much as my two little ones do!

James with jellyfish

The book features tips on making a whole tubful of bathtime (or kiddie-pool) friendly creatures using water-happy materials like sponges, cotton yarn, and terry cloth.

Emily with crocheted toys

Make an army of starfish for the pool, a pair of sharks for your sprinklers, and a pod of dolphins for the bathtub! Tips for making your creatures for dry land use are also included, so dive right in and make a splash with the sea creatures of Bathtime Buddies.

  • Hello,
This new book sounds like a winner! I remember those bath times with my son when he just didn’t want to get out of the tub. Happy memories. Anyway, the whales are my favorite sea creatures. So majestic and varied.

  • These are absolutely adorable, and so lifelike! Cute faces!! I like them all. Especially the otter! A surprise to include him. Wonderful work.

—Cathy Slabaugh on August 15, 2014
  • My favorite sea creature has always been the sea horse. It looks so graceful and tiny. Maybe it is because the male does all the raising of the babies too, lol. Gives the girl one more time to do her heart’s desire. If humans followed that tradition, we women could do so much more sewing, knitting and crocheting.

—Donna Rothacher on August 15, 2014
  • Love the dolphins. But I know several young boys who would love the sharks

—Ann Worsham on August 15, 2014
  • Living by the water gives me love for all these creatures. But the octopus gives me the most delight. Many years ago we had one in an aquarium and we enjoyed it so much so decided to put another one in for company…well, the tank was inked up and when the ink cleared there was only one. I guess he wasn’t lonely.I always admired it and was thankful when we returned it to the sea.

—Margaret Andrews on August 15, 2014
  • The octopus. They are so fluid when they move.

Judy Garling on August 15, 2014
  • I love sea turtles- such huge creatures that just glide in the water and to imagine how they are so tiny when born and make it to the ocean so quickly 🙂

Deborah Armstrong on August 15, 2014
  • My favorite is the "starfish!"

    —Melanie on August 15, 2014
  • The best reason I can think of is my 11 month old great-grandson. His is the joy of our lives. Plus he likes the water and NEEDS water toys.
    Thank you.
