1. "Quilt Recipes" This Way Not That Quilt Along: Week 1 + "Yellow Creek Quilts" book by Jill Shaulis

Welcome to Week 1 of the "Quilt Recipes" This Way Not That Quilt Along!

We have three important steps to check off the list this week:

    1) Make sure you have a copy of the "Quilt Recipes" book by Jen Kingwell. If you already have your copy–great! Gold stars to you! If you don’t have a copy yet–no problem, there’s still time to get your book before we get cutting and stitching! Visit ShopMartingale.com, your local quilt shop, or anywhere you buy quilting books to get your copy as soon as possible. (Tip: Save 7% on "Quilt Recipes" at ShopMartingale.com now, plus get free shipping if your order is $60 or more* US only.)

    2) Choose your fabrics! Referring to p. 25 of "Quilt Recipes" for yardage requirements, choose feature fabrics, dark fabrics for the corner triangles, and light fabrics for the corner triangles that you want to use in YOUR This Way Not That quilt. Which color palette will you use? Will you mirror Jen’s color choices, or do you want to put your own spin on the color choices?

Want to learn more about choosing fabrics? Watch this video! Jen does a step-by-step fabric pull to demonstrate and explain how YOU can:
    • choose fabrics to create visual interest.
    • use her tiered method to provide sparkle.
    • achieve a scrappy–yet coordinated–look for your quilts.

Martingale staffer Lisa Schumacher will be sewing along and sharing her project with you. Lisa is a long-time fan of Jen Kingwell’s fabric collections and quilt patterns, so she’s delighted to lead the This Way Not That Quilt Along on behalf of Martingale. Lisa shares her fabric choices in the quick video below. Here’s the info:

    • feature fabrics: Moving On cotton lawn collection by Jen Kingwell for Moda Fabrics (This is one of Jen’s older collections–I’ve never used cotton lawn fabric, and I’ve been saving my stack of fat quarters for a special occasion. This is it!!)

    • dark fabric for corner triangles: Bella Solids Zen Grey for Moda Fabrics (sku 9900-185)

    • light fabric for corner triangles: Prairie-Orange Wild Acres collection by Victoria Findlay Wolfe for RJR Fabrics (sku VF402-OR2)

^^Click the photo (or this link) to play a flip-through video of Lisa’s fabric choices for her version of This Way Not That.

    3) Connect with our social media accounts. Follow us on Instagram, then follow these hashtags #shopmartingale #quiltrecipes #quiltrecipesqal #thiswaynotthatquilt .(It’s easy–click on each one of the hashtags listed, then click the blue "follow" button). Then, "like" us on Facebook. We’ll share progress updates and photos from the Quilt Along (ours pics + your pics). Use the hashtags listed above so we can see and share your posts!

If you love vintage style, reproduction fabrics, and quilts that look as great in today’s homes as they might have in houses a century or more ago, "Yellow Creek Quilts" is for you!

In her first book with Martingale, Jill Shaulis, the owner of Yellow Creek Quilt Designs shop in Pearl City, Illinois, shares patterns for a variety of antique-inspired patchwork quilts as well as two petite wool-appliqué pieces that are fun to stitch in the quiet moments of the day. Table runners, small quilts, and lap quilts round out the mix, and all are pictured beautifully in settings that will give you ideas for your own home decor.
