The hourglass quilt block: a trimming trick (because they can be tricky!)

Stop the presses!

We just had to share this quick tip with you. It answers a question many of us quilty staffers at Martingale have asked ourselves before—maybe you’ve asked it too.

The question usually arises after removing a bit of patchwork from your sewing machine:

“How come I lost my points?”

Raise your seam ripper if that question sounds familiar!

The talented team behind Red Crinoline Quilts, Paula Barnes and Mary Ellen Robison, discovered the answer, and they share it in their beautiful book Tributes and Treasures:

How-to-trim-Hourglass-blocks

Now those block centers will perch themselves perfectly in the center of your patchwork. And your points will remain just as you sewed them. Pointy!

Tributes and TreasuresPaula and Mary Ellen share this smart tip as they teach you how to sew the quilt on the cover of their book. The quilt is called Antique Star. Funny story about that quilt. Someone in our editorial department was printing out pages from Tributes and Treasures before it was published, and who walked by the printer at that very moment? Our President and CFO, Keith—who just happened to have a tenth anniversary coming up.

Now, if you’ve heard about our tenth-anniversary tradition, you know that staffers make a quilt for each employee that reaches the 10-year mark (and the employee we’re celebrating gets to choose the pattern). Well, Keith saw that copy of the Tributes and Treasures cover sitting on that printer. And it was love at first sight.

Long story short, we got together and made an Antique Star quilt for Keith’s anniversary—and we ALL learned how to trim our Hourglass units to the perfect size!

(That’s the love at first sight.) And then it shows you how to create your own vintage-style quilts more quickly and easily with Paula and Mary Ellen’s tried-and-true tips. Win-win.
