Get hooked! Fresh English paper piecing patterns (+ giveaway!)

Detail from Fig Tree Flowers quilt

Did you know that English paper piecing patterns date back to at least the early 1700s? You might think a hand-sewing technique from eons ago would be s-l-o-w (and we’re guessing it was back then). But with a modernized approach, bestselling author Vicki Bellino has brought this time-honored—and wildly popular—handcraft to a new level of simplicity and speed.

In English Paper Piecing II, Vicki returns to transform not only familiar hexagons, but diamonds, Dresdens, scallops, and more into happy handwork that you can take along everywhere you go. The best part? All the shapes rely on the same basic technique, one that whips up perfect little pieces that you can sew together with ease.

Start with small projects to warm up your needle:

Then move on to bigger projects.

Or, challenge yourself with the cover quilt, made with a mind-boggling 2031 hexies. Wow!

So, what supplies do you need to sew “EPP” projects in the 21st century? Vicki suggests four items: precut papers, a rotary cutter, a glue pen, and sizing spray. Add needle, thread, and Vicki’s easy-to-follow instructions, and you’ll be on your way!

You might remember when we tried EPP—some of us for the first time—when Vicki’s first book, English Paper Piecing, was released:

We all had a blast learning the ropes! Check out all the projects we made here. We’re ready for more—are you?
