“BBQ” quilt-along – round two (+ giveaway!)

My oh my, how our quilts have grown! Last month we started a Round Robin quilt-along using the book Blocks, Borders, Quilts! by Sunny Steinkuhler. If you missed our first post, you can see all the blocks from round one of our “BBQ” quilt-along here. Fourteen people in the office are participating in this fun group activity. This month, we’re sharing progress on the second round—adding 3″ borders to our center blocks.

It’s amazing to see how the center block can change dramatically with a border. You never know how Round Robin quilts will turn out until the very end, but watching them bloom and grow is fascinating. Our quilts are now 18″ square, and everyone used a border from the book. Some of the blocks had such a perfect border added that the border looks like part of the center block. Others have taken a completely different direction, developing a whole new personality. I LOVE what Virginia did to mine—she used the paper pieced “Starry Nights” border.

Doesn’t it just glow?!

Here are some more quilts in progress:

Cathy's BBQ quilt
Cathy’s block with Linda’s “Farmer’s Patch” border
Linda, our beginner, was very worried the border wouldn’t fit perfectly. She was shocked when it worked. We weren’t—the math is all done by Sunny!

Chris's BBQ quilt
Chris’s block with Karen J.’s (that’s me!) “Ladybug’s Picnic” border
Chris had some fabric with preprinted poems and sayings about friendship. Some of the sayings were just the right size for the diamonds in this border—lucky me!

Abbi's BBQ quilt
Abbi’s block with Tracy’s “The Four Corners” border
Tracy accidentally made two complete borders for Abbi’s quilt. She’d read the block dimensions and saw Abbi’s cute animal print. She planned to fussy cut fabrics and was sure they would fit perfectly into the border. After she pieced all four sections and began to add them to the center block, she realized she’d had the wrong block dimensions in her head. Oops! Plan B worked just fine.

Look at the three quilts below. Mary, Tracy, and Virginia started with similar center blocks: “Dogwood” and “Prairie Rose.” Mary’s and Tracy’s blocks now sport the “Signet” border, but with very different results. Virginia’s block, with the “Birch Bark” border, now looks entirely different from the other two blocks. Simple fabric choices and color placement make all the difference, and make every quilt unique!

And Jenny’s at-home quilt-along is growing nicely! She added the “Birch Bark” border with a touch of raw-edge appliqué.
